How do we get key stakeholders in the agricultural value chain (especially farmers), who seems to be masters of improvisation, to realize and trust in their creative confidence to boost productivity?
Innovation in agriculture is crucial to address the global challenges of food security, sustainability, and rural development. Jugaad, a Hindi word meaning “an innovative solution using limited resources,” has been a prevalent practice, particularly in resource-constrained settings like many farming communities in Ghana. However, to harness the full potential of jugaad and drive sustainable agricultural innovations in resource constraint settings like rural farming communities in Ghana, it is essential to combine it with structured problem-solving approaches like Design Thinking.
This meetup is to explore the synergies between Design Thinking and jugaad practices (improvisation). The aim is to establish ways to cause farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural value chain, to accept and innovate more around everyday constraints that inhibit productivity in the agric sector. The session will look at triggers or pathways to improvisation in general and how they can be linked to design thinking concepts/framework, therefore introducing structure to the way of “teaching” and “reinforcing” innovation through improvisation, especially for the purpose of boosting productivity in agriculture.
